Long before the Hives, there were fellow Swedish guitar merchants the Soundtrack of Our Lives (not to mention Union Carbide Productions, the ashes of which produced TSOOL). Our image-obsessed times may make HowlinΓÇÖ Pelle Almqvist more aesthetically marketable than the bearded beastie that is TSOOLΓÇÖs Ebbot Lundberg, but MTVΓÇÖs loss is our considerable gain. Lundberg and co just get better and better, and Origin (Part 1) dispels comprehensively the faint whiff of self-consciousness that, for some, marred 2002's Behind the Music. If they were merely a tribute band ΓÇô and on one level Transcendental Suicide (pure Who), Bigtime (Thin Lizzy) and Midnight Children (Lou Reed) show they would cut it ΓÇô they would be awesome enough. But their fourth album lifts them well clear: on Origin, the essence and spirit of garage-rock are alive and well in TSOOL's hands.
